One civilian was killed and 22 others were injured in a series of airstrikes carried out by Myanmar military forces in Thandwe and Gwa townships in the Arakan region on August 21, according to a statement issued by the Arakan Army today. A school, a Buddhist monastery and civilian homes were also damaged.
In Thandwe Township, airstrikes targeted former Myanmar military battalion bases in Ngapali and areas where civilians and displaced people were staying. The attacks were carried out from 1:57 a.m. to 3:18 a.m. on August 21, lasting for more than an hour, according to the statement.
The attacks reportedly involved eight fighter jets, one Y-12 aircraft and one Y-8 aircraft, with around 100 bombs dropped in total. One civilian displaced by the conflict was killed and 14 others were injured in Ngapali as a result of the attacks.
In addition, Nyaung Chaung Village in Gwa Township was bombed twice by a fighter jet on the morning of August 21, according to the statement.
At 5:01 a.m., a 500-pound bomb was dropped on a high school in Nyaung Chaung Village, injuring seven displaced civilians who had temporarily taken shelter there. One school building was completely destroyed in the attack.
About five minutes later, at 5:05 a.m., another bomb was dropped on Dhamma Yakkhita Monastery in the village. One civilian was injured, while monastery buildings, three nearby civilian homes, a peanut oil mill, a motorcycle and a bicycle were damaged or destroyed.
