Police have detained 3,300 protesters in Delhi amid demonstrations demanding the resignation of India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar.
According to a report by Indian media outlet The Hindu, as of 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, protesters had been detained from various parts of the capital. More than 500 people were also removed from Jantar Mantar and its surrounding areas.
Police detained protesters who attempted to reach Jantar Mantar, put them on buses, and transported them to other locations, the report said. Security was tightened and barricades were erected in several parts of Delhi amid the demonstrations.
Several lawyers from India’s Supreme Court were also among those detained. They were reportedly on their way to participate in the protest against the Chief Election Commissioner when police detained them.
The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) alleged that police were detaining people who were heading to Jantar Mantar to participate in a peaceful demonstration and taking them to undisclosed locations.
The protest was organized by the CJP and several left-wing organizations, which demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process for electoral rolls.
