Around 280 people were detained after police raided the central office of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) in Gulistan, Dhaka, with a court ordering 27 of them to be sent to jail on September 27, according to reports.
The 27 individuals were detained and charged under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Police alleged that they chanted “Joy Bangla” slogans inside the Jasad office and created a situation that could lead to disorder.
During the operation on September 26, around 280 people were detained. Police said 249 of them were released after their identities were verified. The remaining 27 were formally detained and taken to court for legal action.
The court ordered the 27 individuals to be sent to jail, while their bail petition is scheduled to be heard on September 28.
Regarding the incident, Jasad said the gathering was a pre-scheduled central representatives’ meeting and that police had been informed in advance about the programme.
Police and government authorities, however, said they had received information that people linked to the Awami League had gathered inside the Jasad office and that officers entered the premises to investigate the situation. Home Minister said the phones of the 27 detainees would also undergo examination and that legal action would be taken if any suspicious evidence was found.
