A commander of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) was shot dead at the Balukhali Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya Upazila of Cox's Bazar District, Bangladesh, according to local sources and officials from the Armed Police Battalion (APBn).
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. on July 26, when the victim, 36-year-old Mohammad Zubair, was on his way from his home to a nearby mosque inside the camp. Local sources alleged that the attack was carried out by members of the Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO).
Zubair sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, the left side of his body, his left upper arm, and his left hand. APBn officials confirmed that he died while being transported to the hospital.
The deceased was identified as the son of Rahmat Ullah, who resides in Malaysia. He was originally from Zonkara Village, Myin Hlut Town, southern Maungdaw Township in Arakan State, Myanmar, and had been living in Camp 8W, Block C, Sub-block H29 of the Balukhali refugee camp.
Local residents also said that Zubair operated a paid internet-sharing business inside the refugee camp using Starlink Gen-3 equipment.
Violence and targeted killings remain frequent in the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh due to ongoing rivalry among armed groups, including ARSA and RSO, over territorial influence and control. The continuing clashes have heightened security concerns throughout the camps.
