At least 12 civilians were reportedly killed and more than 20 homes damaged after Myanmar military aircraft carried out an airstrike on Kyauk Gyi Village in Thandwe Township, Arakan State, on Monday afternoon, according to local residents cited by One Nation News.
The attack reportedly took place at around 1 p.m. near a Buddhist monastery in the village, which lies between Thandwe and Kyintali. Residents said the strike caused multiple casualties, including among members of the same families.
“As of now, the death toll has reached 12, and there may be many more injured,” a local man told One Nation News. He said nine people died at the scene and three others died while being transported to hospital. At least two people were reportedly still missing, he added, warning that the death toll could rise.
Among those reportedly killed were 45-year-old Daw San San Maw, 88-year-old U Pho Nyein, 83-year-old Daw Khin Ohn, 21-year-old Khine Zan Thin, 87-year-old Daw Nyima Pu, 57-year-old Daw Ma Ni, 36-year-old Ma Zun Mi, her six-year-old son Aung Myint Myat, and 86-year-old Daw Ma Gyi.
People injured in the attack were reportedly taken to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment.
Local residents also said the airstrike damaged more than 20 civilian homes in the village.
The reported attack came less than a week after a series of airstrikes in the Ngapali area. According to local reports cited by One Nation News, Myanmar military aircraft, including fighter jets and a Y-12 transport aircraft, dropped at least 43 bombs on areas around Ngapali town, Jit Taw Ward and Ngapali Beach on August 3.
Residents and local sources have reported an increase in airstrikes on civilian-populated areas across Arakan in recent months, with attacks resulting in civilian deaths, injuries and damage to homes.
One Nation News also reported that the Myanmar military has intensified air operations against towns and villages under the control of the Arakan Army (AA) amid continuing fighting on the Kyaukphyu front.
The reports of the casualties, missing persons and extent of property damage could not be independently verified. The Myanmar military had not issued a public statement regarding the reported airstrike at the time of publication.
