Ishraque Hossain, Deputy Minister for Liberation War Affairs in Bangladesh, announced his resignation on October 19 following controversy over his participation in an anti-drug operation while carrying a firearm.
He announced his decision to resign at a press conference held at the National Press Club in Dhaka. He also said that, despite leaving his ministerial position, he would continue anti-drug activities as a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The controversy began with an anti-drug operation conducted on October 17 near the Dayaganj railway crossing in the Gandaria area of Dhaka.
A video circulated on social media showed Hossain carrying a firearm and instructing others to detain several individuals. Some of those accompanying him were also seen carrying weapons.
The video prompted criticism over a minister personally carrying a firearm and participating in an anti-drug operation. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) also directed officials to investigate whether any laws had been violated during the incident. Police said that appropriate legal action would be taken if any violations were established.
On October 18, reports emerged, citing government sources, that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had instructed Hossain to resign. However, Hossain’s spokesperson denied the reports, stating that no such resignation order had been issued at that time.
Hossain subsequently announced his resignation himself. He also defended his actions, stating that the firearm he carried during the anti-drug operation was legally licensed and that he had carried it for his personal protection.
