As dengue cases continue to rise across Bangladesh and the country enters the peak dengue season, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on September 12 launched a three-month nationwide campaign aimed at preventing dengue and promoting environmental cleanliness.

The campaign, titled “Dengue Prevention and Cleanliness Campaign-2026,” was formally inaugurated at 9:30am at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. The inaugural programme was jointly organised by the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation.

The campaign carries the slogans “Keep your own surroundings clean, let us all stay healthy” and “Remove stagnant water every day.” It will focus on eliminating mosquito breeding grounds and raising public awareness about dengue prevention.

Around 25,000 volunteers and workers participated in the campaign, including cleaning workers from Dhaka North and South city corporations, members of the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC), Girl Guides, Scouts, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and students from various educational institutions.

Cabinet members, parliamentarians, secretaries and senior government officials also attended the programme. Representatives from the administrations of all 64 districts of Bangladesh joined the event virtually.

The campaign will continue for three months, from September 12 to December 12, during the period considered to be at high risk for dengue transmission.

In urban areas, the respective city corporations will coordinate the activities, while deputy commissioners will oversee the programmes at the district level. At the upazila level, Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) will supervise local activities.

In addition to cleanliness drives, dengue prevention awareness activities will involve volunteers from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Scouts, BNCC, Girl Guides, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, as well as school and college students.

The campaign was launched amid a rise in dengue cases in Dhaka and various other parts of Bangladesh.

The decision to launch the nationwide campaign was taken following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s directive at a recent meeting on dengue prevention held at the Secretariat.
