Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin is reportedly preparing to resign, with several Bangladeshi media outlets indicating that he may step down within days, citing health concerns.
According to The Tribune, which cited reports from Jamuna TV, Prothom Alo, and other Bangladeshi media, expectations of an imminent resignation have grown following multiple reports suggesting that the president could leave office as early as Friday.
Prothom Alo, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that Shahabuddin is considering resignation on health grounds, while Jamuna TV said an announcement could come shortly. Neither the President's Office nor the government has publicly confirmed the reports.
Media reports have also identified Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani as a leading candidate to succeed Shahabuddin. Separately, UK-based Bangladeshi journalist Zulkarnain Saer (Sami) wrote on social media that Nasimul Gani had emerged as a potential successor, a claim that was subsequently echoed by several domestic news organizations.
Under Articles 50 and 54 of Bangladesh's Constitution, the Speaker of Parliament would immediately assume the role of Acting President if the presidency becomes vacant. Parliament would then be required to elect a new president within 90 days to complete the remainder of the incumbent's five-year term.
Shahabuddin took office on 24 April 2023 after being elected unopposed as the nominee of the then-ruling Awami League. His current term is due to expire in April 2028.
