Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman highlighted the Rohingya issue as a major priority during the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) being held at the UN Headquarters in New York. He called on the international community to take practical action based on five key measures to achieve a long-term solution to the Rohingya crisis.
At a high-level meeting on the Rohingya issue jointly organized by Bangladesh and Gambia on September 23, Tarique Rahman called for the establishment of a clear and credible roadmap to ensure the timely, safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingya to Myanmar.
He also presented five urgent measures to address the Rohingya crisis. They are:
1. Develop a clear roadmap for the safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya.2. End violence against civilians, including the Rohingya, and ensure their fundamental rights and security.
3. Continue providing adequate and predictable humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya and the local communities hosting them.
4. Strengthen justice and accountability.
5. Enhance regional and international cooperation to combat transnational crimes, including human trafficking, drug-related economies, illegal arms, and digital fraud.
Tarique Rahman said that “Bangladesh is currently hosting more than 1.2 million Rohingya,” and added that “as the Rohingya crisis originated in Myanmar, the solution must also be found in Myanmar.”
He further said that the current situation in Myanmar remains concerning and that challenges persist in creating conditions for the safe and dignified repatriation and resettlement of the Rohingya.
Tarique Rahman said that although Bangladesh has hosted the Rohingya for many years on humanitarian grounds, Bangladesh cannot be expected to bear this burden indefinitely. He urged the international community to create the necessary conditions for the safe and dignified return and resettlement of the Rohingya.Source: Asia-pacific
