Bangladesh’s economy, which was worth only around $8.75 billion when the country gained independence in 1971, is projected to reach more than $500 billion in 2026, according to economic projections by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to the IMF’s World Economic Outlook (WEO) data, Bangladesh’s nominal GDP could reach approximately $510.7 billion in 2026, meaning that the size of the country’s economy will have increased by around 58 times since independence.

In the years following independence, Bangladesh’s economy experienced fluctuations due to the aftermath of the war and various economic challenges. In 1972, GDP fell to $6.29 billion, before rising to $12.51 billion in 1974 and $19.45 billion in 1975.

From the 1980s onward, the size of the economy began to grow more steadily. In 1990, Bangladesh’s GDP crossed the $40 billion mark for the first time, reaching $41.07 billion.

In 1999, GDP increased to $61.53 billion, and in 2008, it crossed the $100 billion milestone for the first time, reaching $109.76 billion.

The pace of economic expansion then accelerated. GDP reached $233.69 billion in 2015, $293.76 billion in 2017, and $416.27 billion in 2021.

However, GDP measured in U.S. dollars fluctuated in the following years. It stood at $451.53 billion in 2023, declined slightly to $450.46 billion in 2024, and then increased to approximately $456.89 billion in 2025. The IMF’s 2026 data also indicates the potential for continued growth in Bangladesh’s nominal GDP.

According to the IMF’s WEO data, Bangladesh’s economy could cross the $500 billion milestone for the first time in 2026, reaching approximately $510.7 billion. The WEO is one of the IMF’s key data sources, providing current data and projections on countries’ GDP, inflation, unemployment and other economic indicators.

Thus, Bangladesh’s economy, which was worth only around $8.75 billion in 1971, has gradually expanded over the decades and could reach more than $500 billion in 2026.
