Bangladesh will hold a high-level event on the Rohingya crisis in New York during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to attend the event and address the Rohingya crisis, the foreign minister said.

The event is expected to focus on the continued displacement of Rohingya refugees and the need for stronger international cooperation to achieve a lasting solution. It is also expected to highlight the need for their safe, voluntary and sustainable return to Myanmar.

As large-scale repatriation efforts remain stalled, Bangladesh is seeking greater international pressure and cooperation over the crisis.

Earlier, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said that a Rohingya-focused session would be held during this year’s UN General Assembly and that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would attend.

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly began on September 8 under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”

Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said Bangladesh would continue working with partner countries, donors and international organisations to keep the Rohingya issue high on the global agenda.

He also reiterated Bangladesh’s position that the root causes of the crisis lie in Myanmar and that any durable solution must ultimately address the conditions inside Myanmar.

However, no specific date, list of participating countries or new repatriation mechanism has yet been announced for the event.
