Bangladesh's Deputy Foreign Minister, Sharma Obaid, has urged the Indian government to prevent former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from engaging in political activities from Indian territory, saying it is entirely up to New Delhi to decide whether such activities will be allowed to continue.
Speaking to reporters on the evening of August 6, Obaid said the future direction of Bangladesh-India relations depends largely on the course of action taken by the Indian government.
His remarks came in response to statements made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a press conference held in New Delhi on August 5.
Obaid strongly criticized Hasina's remarks, alleging that "individuals accused of crimes, authoritarian and fascist figures, along with members of the ousted Awami League, are continuing to coordinate political activities from Indian soil."
He warned that if the Indian government fails to take immediate steps to stop such activities, the situation could become a matter of serious concern for the people of Bangladesh.
Obaid further stated that Bangladesh-India relations encompass a wide range of areas, including strategic cooperation, trade, and regional security, and stressed that any differences between the two countries should be resolved through dialogue and mutual engagement.
"It is for the Indian government to decide whether it will continue to allow individuals accused of crimes, authoritarian and fascist figures to engage in political activities from its territory," the deputy foreign minister said.
He concluded by expressing hope that both Bangladesh and India remain committed to maintaining and strengthening a constructive bilateral relationship based on mutual interests.
