Bangladesh and the United States signed a strategic cooperation agreement on September 26 aimed at the peaceful use of civilian nuclear energy, according to reports.
The agreement was signed on behalf of Bangladesh by Rehan Asad, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Science and Technology, and on behalf of the United States by Jacob Helberg, Under Secretary for Economic Affairs.
Under the agreement, the two countries will expand technical exchanges, nuclear safety cooperation, and scientific collaboration in the civilian nuclear energy sector.
According to diplomatic sources, the agreement builds on the Bangladesh–US civilian nuclear cooperation framework initiated in 1981 during the administration of President Ziaur Rahman. At the time, the two countries signed the “Agreement for Cooperation Concerning Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy” in Dhaka, and the current initiative continues that cooperation framework.
The cooperation is also aimed at supporting the development of Bangladesh’s civilian nuclear energy sector and expanding the exchange of technology and expertise related to nuclear safety.
