A Bangladeshi national who was injured in a shooting by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) near the Pirganj border in Thakurgaon district, Bangladesh, has died while receiving treatment at a hospital in India.

The deceased was identified as 38-year-old Asadul Haque, a resident of Idrail village in Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon district, according to the Dinajpur 42 Battalion of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Lt Col Abdullah Al Moin, commander of Dinajpur 42 BGB, said the information about the incident came through Indian media reports and that the BSF has not yet issued an official statement.

According to a statement issued by the BGB on Saturday night, Asadul Haque was identified as a suspected drug carrier and was allegedly involved in human trafficking. Several cases have also been filed against him at Pirganj Police Station, the statement said.

According to the BGB, BSF personnel opened fire on a group of Bangladeshi traders about 1.5 kilometres inside India from the Pirganj border on Friday. Asadul Haque was injured in the incident and was later taken by BSF personnel to a hospital in Raiganj, India.

Asadul Haque died while undergoing treatment at the Raiganj hospital, according to the report.

Shahjahan Ali, a member of the Pirganj Baichuna Union Parishad, said Asadul Haque was a resident of his area and that he learned about the death through Indian media reports.

He said he visited Asadul's home, spoke with his family members and subsequently informed the BGB about the incident.

BGB commander Lt Col Abdullah Al Moin said the BSF has not yet issued any official statement regarding the incident. He added that a flag meeting between the BGB and BSF has been scheduled for Sunday to obtain further details about the incident.
