The bodies of six of the seven Bangladeshi nationals killed in a fire at a hotel in Kolkata, India, on August 19 have been repatriated to Bangladesh, according to a statement issued by the Bangladeshi authorities.
The bodies were handed over to the victims’ family members last night after local authorities completed the necessary formalities. The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata provided the necessary assistance throughout the repatriation process.
The body of S.M. Alimuzzaman from Satkhira was repatriated to Bangladesh through the Ghojadanga-Bhomra border this morning and handed over to his family.
Meanwhile, the bodies of Debashish Dutta from Kushtia and his family members—Afsana Sharmin, Shornashish Dutta and Md. Akram Ali—as well as the body of Babu Ahmed from Aminbazar in Dhaka, were repatriated through the Petrapole-Benapole border this afternoon.
The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata provided the families with necessary assistance throughout the process of preserving, transporting and repatriating the bodies to Bangladesh.
Of the seven victims, the body of Repti Sarkar from Satkhira was cremated in Kolkata on the night of August 21, in accordance with the wishes of the family. The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission also provided financial and other necessary assistance in this regard.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh expressed its deepest condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families of those killed in the fire.
