Myanmar's military government has announced that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the State Counsellor who has been detained since the military coup, met with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Resident Representative to Myanmar, Mr. Arnaud de Baecque, on the morning of August 3.
According to the statement, the meeting was held in Naypyidaw. Presidential Office spokesperson Daw Khaing Khaing Soe said Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was in good health and that further details about the meeting would be released later.
Daw Khaing Khaing Soe also stated that although ASEAN and various international organizations had requested permission to meet Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the ICRC was the first organization to be granted access. She added that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's health condition remained good.
Photos released by the military authorities showed Mr. Arnaud de Baecque shaking hands with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The statement also included photographs of a birthday cake presented to her on June 19, 2026, marking her 81st birthday.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained since the military seized power on February 1, 2021, and has been serving multiple long-term prison sentences for more than five years. The meeting with the ICRC is the first publicly announced meeting with an international organization since her detention following the coup.
ASEAN has continued to urge the military authorities to implement the Five-Point Consensus adopted in April 2021 to address Myanmar's political crisis. However, the military has faced continued criticism for failing to fully implement the agreement.
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) also said the meeting between Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the ICRC represented a partial success resulting from sustained pressure by domestic and international actors, including ASEAN.
In its statement, the AAPP called for the unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and urged that her role in Myanmar's future political process be formally recognized as part of efforts to resolve the country's ongoing crisis.
