Amid growing military pressure on Iran and the possibility of a ground offensive by the United States and Israel, Iranian women have been undergoing weapons-handling and basic military training at a civilian military training camp in Tehran, Iran.

On October 4, female volunteers at a civilian military training camp set up at Imam Hussein Square in Tehran received instructions from military personnel and trainers and practiced handling and firing firearms.

Iran also opened a new military training camp for civilians at Haft-e Tir Square on October 3, reportedly to prepare civilians to respond in the event that U.S. and Israeli forces launch a ground invasion.

The training includes women and other volunteers learning how to use firearms, basic military skills, and how to respond to emergency situations.

The current civilian military training activities in Iran are part of a public mobilisation campaign known as “Janfada,” which means “those ready to sacrifice their lives for Iran.” In September, a large-scale military-style public mobilisation was also held in Tehran, with authorities encouraging civilians to prepare for military and emergency response situations.

A 45-year-old female trainee, Raheleh Ghadiri, reportedly said that being trained to protect her family and neighbourhood in the event of war would help reduce her concerns, according to Bangladeshi news sources.

Tensions between the United States and Iran remain high, while the possibility of renewed escalation in military conflict between Israel and Iran also persists. The civilian military training activities in Tehran indicate that Iran’s preparations for potential conflict are expanding domestically.
