The United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) had announced an indefinite suspension of all types of vehicle movement from September 5 in Sajek, Machalong Bazar, Uzo Bazar, Baghaihat Bazar, tourist areas and the Udaypur Road in Bagaichhari Upazila of Rangamati District, Bangladesh. However, local residents have reportedly continued operating vehicles despite the announcement.

According to reports, local transport owners, drivers and members of the public have ignored the UPDF’s directive and continued vehicle services as normal.

Meanwhile, residents have alleged that UPDF members have been pressuring villagers in Eguzzachhari, No. 7, No. 8, Gangaram and Bridge Para villages near Machalong Bazar not to provide assistance to people supporting the peace agreement.

According to local residents, they have also been threatened with expulsion from their villages and direct shooting if they provide any assistance to such individuals.

The threats have reportedly caused serious concerns over personal safety among residents of the affected villages.

According to information provided by local residents, several armed commanders of the UPDF have allegedly been actively involved in the threats and armed activities.

The commanders named in the report include so-called Company Commander Ranjan Moni Chakma, alias Ade; Platoon Commander Supan Chakma, alias Roni; Section Commander Ripon Chakma, alias Jonam; Platoon Commander Goppo Chakma, alias Biplab; and Section Commander Baneshwar Chakma, alias Dhaneshwar.

Residents have claimed that such armed threats and activities by the UPDF have seriously threatened the normal lives and livelihoods of the local Jumma communities.

UPDF has not issued a separate response to the allegations in the report.
