A 45-year-old man was injured in the head following an altercation with a former Jubo Dal leader in Dhaka’s Banglamotor area, after which two blank shots were reportedly fired, according to Bangladeshi media reports.

The incident took place at around 8:10pm on October 1 in a lane north of the Banglamotor intersection, under the jurisdiction of Hatirjheel Police Station. The injured man was identified as Sohan, 45, a resident of New Eskaton.

According to officials at Hatirjheel Police Station, Sohan had an argument with Ferdous Ahmed Simon, the former and expelled leader of Hatirjheel Thana Jubo Dal, over a local issue. During the altercation, Simon allegedly struck Sohan on the head with the butt of a firearm.

Police said that following the incident, Simon fired two blank shots and attempted to leave the area on a motorcycle. Local residents reportedly stopped the motorcycle, damaged it and set it on fire.

Sohan was taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 10:30pm for treatment.

Following the incident, more than 100 local residents reportedly gathered outside Simon’s residence and protested, accusing him of illegally collecting money. The Daily Star reported the allegations, which have not been independently verified.

Police and members of the Special Reserve Force (SRF) were subsequently deployed in the area. Around midnight, police detained Simon and three others, bringing the total number detained to four. Authorities are reportedly taking legal action in connection with the incident.

The incident created tensions in and around Banglamotor, prompting additional police deployment to maintain security in the area, according to Bangladeshi media reports.
