The injured man was identified as Hamid Hossain, a resident of Block C-27 of the registered Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhiya. He was reportedly injured in the blast at around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 1.
According to the BGB, the explosion occurred within the area of responsibility of the Palongkhali Border Outpost (BOP), approximately 2 kilometres north of border pillar BRM-19 and about 250 yards west of the zero line, on the Rakhine State side of the border. The site was also around 1.5 kilometres northeast of the Palongkhali BGB Border Outpost, the BGB said.
After being injured in the blast, Hamid crossed the border into Bangladesh. With assistance from BGB personnel and local residents, he was taken to MSF Hospital in Kutupalong for treatment. Bangladeshi media later reported that he was transferred to Cox’s Bazar District Hospital for further treatment.
Landmine-related incidents have previously occurred in the border area. According to the Dhaka Tribune, more than 40 landmine explosions occurred in the Ukhiya, Teknaf and Naikhongchhari border areas between January 1, 2025 and October 1, 2026, killing at least five people, including a BGB member, and injuring many others.
There have also previously been reports of deaths and injuries caused by landmines in Rakhine State. However, the BGB statement only confirmed the location and circumstances of the latest explosion and did not officially identify who planted the mine.
