The Myanmar military junta carried out an airstrike on Mrauk-U Township in Arakan State for more than an hour on the night of August 4 using fighter jets and Y-12 aircraft, injuring four displaced civilians, according to a statement released by the Arakan Army (AA) on August 5.
According to the statement, the junta launched the attack at around 9:00 p.m. on August 4, deploying six fighter jets and two Y-12 aircraft to drop more than 30 bombs over Mrauk-U.
The AA said the airstrikes targeted the former sites of the junta's Infantry Battalion No. 540 and Police Battalion No. 31, as well as nearby areas where internally displaced persons (IDPs) were sheltering. The bombing reportedly continued without interruption for more than an hour, from around 9:00 p.m. until after 10:00 p.m.
As a result of the attack, four displaced civilians, including people displaced by both conflict and flooding, sustained moderate injuries. The statement also said that three cattle belonging to local residents were killed and another five were injured.
The AA urged residents across Arakan to remain vigilant against the continuing threat of junta airstrikes while traveling and carrying out daily activities, despite the ongoing rainy season.
The Myanmar military junta has not issued any separate statement regarding the reported airstrike, and Karnaphuli has not been able to independently verify the incident.
