The Bangladesh government is coordinating various initiatives to bring Jungle Salimpur in the Chittagong region under good governance and strengthen the rule of law, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said.
The minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists following a meeting at the government secretariat in Dhaka on October 8, according to Bangladeshi media reports.
According to the minister, a road network is being constructed in Jungle Salimpur under the leadership of the Engineering Construction Battalion (ECB) of Bangladesh. The government is also monitoring and reviewing the progress of the work.
He said plans were underway to manage government-owned land, hill areas and khas land in the region systematically and bring them under a framework of good governance.
The government has also decided to establish a police academy in the area, modelled on the Sarda Police Academy in Rajshahi, as Jungle Salimpur has been known for crime and security problems. The Home Minister said authorities were searching for a suitable site for the proposed academy.
Meanwhile, the Chittagong Central Jail is also planned to be relocated to Jungle Salimpur. Authorities have reportedly acquired 72 acres of land near the Bayezid Link Road for the purpose.
Plans are also being developed to address the resettlement of people living in the area illegally and to ensure the systematic management of other institutions, including educational establishments.
