A shooting occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai District, Nonthaburi Province, north of Bangkok, Thailand, on the morning of August 7, after a student opened fire, leaving several people dead and injured, according to Thai authorities.
Police confirmed that the suspected shooter was a student at the school. However, the exact number of fatalities has not yet been confirmed, said Lt Col Pasakorn Chaitawiwong, chief of the Plai Bang Police Station, in comments to Reuters.
According to preliminary reports, between 15 and 20 people were injured in the shooting, while at least two people were killed. The number of casualties could increase as medical assessments continue.
Following the shooting, emergency rescue teams and medical personnel rushed to the school, where they provided emergency treatment to the injured and evacuated students from the school grounds to safety.
Photographs released by emergency response teams showed students hurriedly leaving the school compound, while medical personnel were seen providing emergency treatment to an injured person lying on a stretcher near an ambulance.
Authorities have yet to provide detailed information about the motive for the shooting, the suspect's intentions, or the confirmed number of people killed and injured. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Thailand also witnessed a shooting at a school in the southern city of Hat Yai in February this year, in which a teacher was killed and a student was injured.
Thai police are continuing to investigate the Debsirin Nonthaburi school shooting, including the suspect's background, the motive behind the attack, and how the firearm was obtained.
