Bangladesh Floods Leave 56 Dead as More Than 600,000 People Affected

Flooding across Bangladesh has killed at least 56 people and affected more than 600,000 residents, according to government figures.

The disaster has impacted 59 upazilas in eight districts, including Chattogram, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Cox's Bazar, and Sylhet.

Preliminary government assessments indicate that 609,441 families have been affected by the floods. Officials said most of the confirmed deaths occurred in landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in the country's hilly southeastern districts.

As floodwaters begin to recede in several areas, authorities have shifted their focus from emergency rescue operations to rehabilitation and recovery efforts across the eight affected districts.

Bangladesh Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu said the government had begun implementing a recovery plan following an inter-ministerial coordination meeting at the Secretariat.

"Water levels have started to fall in many affected areas, and most rescue operations have been completed. Our main priority now is to rehabilitate the people affected by the floods," Dulu said.

He described the disaster as one of the most severe floods to hit the Chattogram region in recent years and said the government had closely monitored the situation from the beginning of the crisis.

According to the minister, the Bangladesh Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and Bangladesh Coast Guard were deployed immediately to rescue stranded residents and provide emergency assistance.
