Bangladesh Urges Stronger Global Cooperation Against Emerging Terrorism Threats at UN

Bangladesh has called for stronger international cooperation to address the evolving global threat of terrorism, warning that extremist groups are increasingly exploiting artificial intelligence, encrypted communications, virtual assets, and other digital technologies to advance their operations.

Speaking during the United Nations General Assembly debate on the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy on July 1, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, reaffirmed the country's policy of zero tolerance toward terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms.

According to Bangladesh's state-run news agency UNB, as reported by the Daily Sun, the ambassador said Bangladesh has established a comprehensive legal and institutional framework to combat terrorism and terrorist financing, supported by close coordination among the country's law enforcement agencies.

He emphasized that counter-terrorism efforts must remain firmly rooted in the rule of law and the protection of human rights, stressing that security measures should not come at the expense of fundamental freedoms.

Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury also urged the international community to strengthen collective efforts to address the underlying drivers of terrorism, while calling for greater action to combat Islamophobia and hate speech, which he said can contribute to conditions that foster extremism.

The remarks came as UN member states reviewed the implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, amid growing international concern over the use of emerging technologies by terrorist organizations and the increasingly transnational nature of security threats.
