Flooding Affects More Than 70 Wards and Villages across Arakan, Says HDCO

More than 70 urban wards and villages across Arakan have been affected by flooding, according to a statement issued by the Humanitarian and Development Coordination Office (HDCO) on July 9.

Based on data collected as of July 8, HDCO reported that flooding has impacted at least 70 wards and villages in Maungdaw, Buthidaung, Rathedaung, Kyauktaw, Paletwa, Mrauk-U, and Minbya townships. The statement also said that three people have died as a result of the flooding.

The agency added that roads and bridges have been damaged, while landslides and riverbank collapses have also been reported in several affected areas.

As of July 9, heavy rainfall was continuing across the region, raising concerns that flooding could worsen further. HDCO said the situation has reached a level requiring an emergency response.

According to the statement, HDCO will coordinate with departments of the Arakkha People's Revolutionary Government and relevant humanitarian and rescue organizations to carry out flood response operations.

The agency also urged residents in flood-affected townships to remain alert to the risks posed by flooding, landslides, riverbank erosion, and venomous animals, and to follow official safety advisories to help reduce the impact of the disaster.
