A house collapsed on July 8 in Minbya Township, Arakan, due to erosion caused by the Lay Myo River, while more than 70 other houses are reportedly facing the risk of landslides, according to local residents.
A resident of Minbya said that a house in U Soe Thein Ward of Minbya Township collapsed due to erosion from the Lay Myo River. In addition, two sawmills and more than 70 other houses are also at risk of being affected by landslides.
“Continuous rainfall has caused flooding and water inundation. Due to the heavy rain, the current of the Lay Myo River has become very strong. This morning, a house in U Soe Thein Ward was damaged and collapsed. More than 70 other houses could collapse at any time due to landslides,” the resident said.
Currently, ongoing heavy rainfall across Arakan has caused flooding in some townships, and some local residents are reportedly facing difficulties with food and livelihoods.
In addition, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has issued a warning that there is a very high possibility of flash floods occurring in northern Arakan and Chin State from July 8 to July 11.
The authorities have also warned that strong winds may affect the Arakan coastal areas and the Gulf of Martaban, with significantly higher waves expected. People traveling by waterways have been urged to exercise caution in advance.
